Panglao has two maps. The official one is made of ten barangays. The visitor map is made of beaches, resorts and commercial strips. Alona belongs to the second.
Both maps can help. They are not interchangeable.

Panglao has two useful maps
A barangay is an administrative place. It appears in addresses, population tables, public records and government responsibility. A beach or commercial name can be more useful when choosing where to swim or eat.
Confusing the two is how a room that looks “near Alona” becomes a daily transport problem—or how information about one part of the island is casually assigned to another.

The ten official barangays
The Philippine Statistics Authority’s current Panglao registry lists ten barangays. Their 2024 figures add to the municipality’s recorded population of 41,760.

So which barangay is Alona Beach in?
For most address searches, Tawala is the useful first answer—but it is not a licence to assign every property marketed as “Alona” to Tawala.
In 2024, the Bohol Provincial Development Council endorsed a proposed Alona Beach waterfront project “in Tawala, Panglao”. The project is located in Tawala, giving the clearest administrative lead for the beachfront name.
The broader place name has not always been used so narrowly. A 2003 Philippine APEC Study Center discussion paper selected both Tawala and Danao for its Panglao fieldwork and described the two barangays as sitting around the Alona Beach resort cluster. That is historical research, not a current boundary ruling, but it explains why “Alona area” cannot assign a restaurant, road or accommodation by itself.

Alona, Dumaluan and Momo are not extra barangays
Alona, Dumaluan and Momo do not appear in the PSA’s ten-name list. The names are real and useful; they simply belong to visitor geography rather than separate barangay governments.
Doljo and Danao move between the two systems more neatly: each is an official barangay and a familiar visitor label. Poblacion is an official barangay and the name used for the older town centre. Even then, the familiar name does not complete a street address or identify the correct entrance.
Panglao Island also contains two municipalities. A property can accurately say it is on Panglao Island while its official address says Dauis. That property is still on the island, but it is not part of Panglao municipality’s ten-barangay list. Our short geography guide explains the distinction.

Urban and rural are not travel reviews
PSA classifies seven Panglao barangays as urban and three—Bil-isan, Looc and Tangnan—as rural. These are statistical categories, not promises about pavements, nightlife, silence, transport or restaurant choice.
The population figures need the same restraint. Danao recorded the largest 2024 count and Lourdes the smallest. That alone says nothing about visitor volume, resort rooms, traffic or the amount of shoreline available to the public.

Why the barangay changes the practical answer
Addresses. The barangay narrows the destination; the local address, entrance and pin finish the route.
Accommodation. Two properties can use the same beach or island keyword while creating different journeys to restaurants, the shore or an arrival terminal. Compare their official addresses before comparing their adjectives.
Public information. A barangay notice, closure or service announcement has a jurisdiction. The resort label in a booking may not be the name used by the responsible office.
Statistics. A Panglao-wide figure does not automatically describe Alona, and an Alona observation does not describe the whole municipality.

Ask for the complete address
Before booking or travelling, save four pieces of geography.
The beach name helps you imagine the trip. The barangay tells you which administrative place you are in. The address and pin get you to the door.
