Choose a base that saves you rides

Look for room to spread out, a pool with a shallow end, a short walk to the sand and as few transfers as possible. On a small island, the area decides most of that; our where-to-stay guide compares them.

Alona puts restaurants and boats within walking distance, but it is the busiest shore, and shoreline works at Alona, including the seawall, were still under way in August 2026 (SunStar). Danao, next door, is quieter; the tourism office recommends swimming there at high tide. Bolod, Dumaluan and Libaong have the shores the office describes as calm and shallow, but fewer restaurants, so expect resort meals or short rides. Doljo and Momo are quieter still, with shallow flats at low tide.

Before you book, ask the resort:

• Does the family room have a separate bedroom, and how many children share it free?
• Is there a shallow or children's pool, and are any pools adults-only?
• How far is the room from the sand, and are there steps on the way?
• Is there shade on the beach, and does a lifeguard watch the pool or shore?
• Can the airport transfer include a child seat?

Beach days: pick the shore and the tide

The municipal tourism office describes Dumaluan, in Bolod, as shallow and calm “with a gradual slope” and calls it family-friendly; resorts and beach areas there often have cottages, toilets and food. It calls Libaong calm and shallow, and Bolod a shore of gentle waves and shallow areas. These are promotional descriptions, not safety ratings, and each page gives the same advice: swim in safe areas and follow local advisories.

Check the tide. Doljo, Libaong and Momo show shallow pools and flats at low tide, better for paddling than swimming. At Alona, travel guides report that the water turns shallow at low tide, with seagrass close to shore (Nasha Planeta, Daily Travel Pill), so reef shoes help. The free PH Tides app from NAMRIA, the national mapping agency, gives predicted high and low waters.

Water quality near Alona is a known problem: in September 2024 the provincial environment office said fecal coliform levels around Alona were high regardless of the tide (Bohol Tribune). That report named no other beach, which is not the same as other beaches testing clean. Look for posted notices and ask your resort before children swim.

The Department of Health advises avoiding the sun from 9am to 4pm and reapplying SPF 30 sunscreen every two hours, more often after swimming (Inquirer, reporting DOH advice), so swim early and late.

Do not assume anyone is watching the water. The Coast Guard's 2014 rules for beach resorts call for trained lifeguards, one per 20 meters of shoreline (The Freeman); ask whether one is on duty, and when. At Alona, barriers along the new seawall were still only planned in August 2026 (SunStar), so keep small children away from the edge.

Boat trips with children

The classic half-day trip leaves Alona early, looks for dolphins, stops at Balicasag for snorkeling and ends on the Virgin Island sandbar; the tourism office pitches it at families. Travel guides updated in 2025 and 2026 put shared tours at roughly ₱800 to ₱2,000 per person and a private boat at ₱3,000 to ₱5,000 (JourneyEra, LakbayPinas; checked 29 September 2026). A private boat lets you head back early.

National rules for passenger boats with open decks require every passenger to wear a life jacket from departure until the end of the voyage, with jackets marked for adults or children (MARINA Memorandum Circular 08, 2008). Whether every island-hopping boat is licensed under this rule is not clear, so insist on jackets regardless. Before paying, ask whether the boat carries jackets in your children's sizes and has shade. Explain Bohol's dolphin-watching guidelines to children beforehand: no swimming with, touching or feeding the dolphins, and about 20 minutes' viewing at most. Boats should slow below 7 knots within 400 meters and never chase a mother and calf. Vendor stalls are no longer allowed on Virgin Island since it reopened in February 2026 (Province of Bohol), so bring water and snacks, and take your rubbish home.

Health and safety

For an emergency, call 911. Panglao's public primary care facility is in Poblacion, and the hospital emergency services in our medical care guide are in Tagbilaran, roughly 18 to 20 km from Alona by road (Rome2rio). Save your resort's address and your insurer's assistance number before you arrive.

On 25 August 2026 the provincial government declared a province-wide dengue outbreak. The order applies the Department of Health's “4S” approach: destroy mosquito breeding sites, protect yourself from bites, seek medical advice early and support fogging in hotspots (SunStar). Pack repellent and light long sleeves, and ask your doctor which repellent suits your children's ages. Check provincial announcements for whether the declaration is still in force when you travel.

Heatstroke is an emergency: the Department of Health says to call 911 and cool the person with cold compresses (Inquirer). Our packing list covers sun and rain gear.

Getting around with car seats and luggage

Philippine law requires children aged 12 and under to ride in a child restraint system unless they are at least 150 cm tall and belted, keeps them out of the front seat unless they meet that height, and forbids leaving them alone in a vehicle (Republic Act 11229). It applies to private vehicles; public transport, including app-based rides, is covered only if the Department of Transportation decides so. Do not assume a van, taxi or Grab car has a child seat: ask in writing, or bring your own.

With bags and a car seat, a private transfer is simplest. Ask the resort for the total price, the vehicle size and what happens if your flight is late (see our airport guide). A fare board at the airport in November 2025 listed ₱700 for a car for up to three and ₱800 for a van for up to eight, to Panglao destinations outside the Alona area (Interaksyon); it is not clear who set those rates. Grab has operated in Panglao since December 2024.

Tricycles, motorbikes with a sidecar, are the usual choice for short distances. The official fare is ₱20 for the first kilometer plus ₱5 for each extra kilometer, per person, so the airport to Alona is ₱30. They suit a short hop to dinner, but have little room for luggage and nowhere to fit a child seat.

When to go

The dry season runs from December to May, cooler until February and hottest from March to May (PAGASA). Rain is possible in any month, and from June to November more boat trips depend on the weather. Our when-to-visit guide goes season by season.

Resorts fill when Filipino schools are out. Public schools run from 8 June 2026 to 8 April 2027, with classes resuming after Christmas on 4 January (GMA News), so expect the busiest weeks at Christmas and New Year, over Holy Week (21 to 28 March in 2027) and from April to early June. January and February are a reasonable compromise: cooler than April and May, and outside the main school holidays.
